Leaders Anticipate Change

Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.
— John F. Kennedy

The difference between a manager and a leader is managers sustain and maintain, while leaders expand new horizons. Both roles are extremely important for the success of any organization, because without managers, you lack structure and stability. Without leaders, you are only managing and your organization won't reach its full potential.

If you want to grow in leadership, you need to learn how to anticipate the future. You do want to make sure you are delegating current responsibilities to others and getting your work done, but not at the expense of planning ahead. Leaders are able to lead others because they are able to see what is beyond before it becomes a reality. You must know as a leader the way you're doing what you're doing won't work forever.

In my experience, startups, large corporations, and churches have fallen behind and died out because of an inability to pivot and make necessary changes. if you're not willing to change, you'll lose your place in the lead. Steve Jobs was the market leader because he pulled the future into the present. During the dedication ceremony of Disney World, someone turned to Mrs. Disney and said, "Isn't it a shame that Walt didn't live to see this?" Mrs. Disney replied, "He did see it, that's why it's here." Leaders are visionaries who refuse to settle for status quo.

When you anticipate change you lead intentionally, not reactively.
