Independence Day
Here in America, we celebrate Independence Day today when we declared our independence from British sovereignty and colonialism. But what I love most about this holiday is the backyard barbecues, the firework shows and parades that draw hundreds into lawns and rooftops. It's the "getting-together" part of July 4th that I enjoy the most.
We Are Connected
It is important to celebrate America's independence but, we must remember the value of inTERdependence. Especially in our world today, we should never forget how interconnected we are, not only all over the world, but also across time and generations. What I do here in America does affect someone living in Indonesia. What I do today does affect my children's children.
We Need Each Other
I'm not saying any of this to create fear, but to encourage intentionality and interdependence -- we need each other, and we shouldn't be afraid to lean on one another. In a world where independence is a high value, and people want to be known as "self-made", the truth is, no one is truly "self-made". There's always someone along the way who helped them along. We need each other, whether we like it or not.
